Eko Land (Pvt) Ltd. is situated in a small village in the Central hills of Sri Lanka and run by a Sri Lankan / Dutch family on their ancestral land. The company was established in 1999 to promote eco-tourism and organic farming. We were really proud of our achievements in protecting the environment and providing employment to the local community, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to close down our tourism arm and make the painful decision to send home our staff - mostly poor villagers who worked closely with us for a decade or more. However, all was not lost and the agricultural side of the business still gave us hope.
Our story...... With generous contributions from friends and relatives and by using the experience of the Founder in exports, value-added agricultural exports emerged as a new opportunity. If the downside of the pandemic was job-losses and closures, the upside was the renewed interest for immunity-boosting natural foods such as the spices growing around us in abundance in small organic farms. These forest farms are also known as Kandyan Forest Gardens and practice, what is more recently referred to as Regenerative Agriculture. Unfortunately, due to pandemic-related travel restrictions and the high cost of certification, we were unable to renew our organic certification, which was last issued in 2019 by Control Union. However, due to our ability to ensure the sustainability of our farmer's organic produce, we had the confidence to move forward and meet the demands of the health-conscious consumer. A processing unit was soon constructed, complete with mechanical dryers to ensure that the products - bought raw from our farmer network at a premium price to sustain their livelihood, are hygienically processed in our factory to ensure a clean, fresh product of the highest quality, packed in eco-friendly reusable zip-lock kraft paper bags that drop neatly into the Eko Land tote bag or back-pack. Through our partnership with DHL, consumers world-wide could now get a wide range of health products delivered to their doorstep within days. Foreign visitors purchasing directly from our factory in Wepathana village will have the added advantage of having to pay only a fraction of the price of that in their home-country. We are confident that our combo pack and individual packs specially designed for health-conscious consumers will be hailed as a gift from nature. When making a purchase, you will be directly contributing 1% to our charity affiliate, the Forest Healing Foundation, for their reforestation programs.
